Among Eileen le Sueur's papers there are songs - songs we know and some we've never heard of before. There are also fragments of songs: for example, choruses without verses - and in particular without music or the name of the tune. Here's one of these song fragments: "Our Traditions". We've only got the chorus (or the refrain), and we know from the information in another document, an old concert programme, that the words were written by Amelia Perchard.

Luckily, some Jersey people have long memories! We took some of the papers along to the regular Thursday morning café meet-ups, where the song was recognised and the chorus could even be sung. But could we name that tune? Perhaps from an operetta or musical, a show tune but nothing to show for it? But isn't technology wonderful? We sent a recording of the tune to Jerseyman Henry Johnson, professor of music in New Zealand, who was able to tell us that it was "Goodbye" from the operetta "White Horse Inn". So that's the author and the tune and the chorus sorted - but does anyone have a copy of the rest of the lyrics?

D'nos anchêtres j'suivrons quand i' veindra l'temps.
Et bouans Jèrriais je souotcheindrons touos les
Hoummes dans l's Êtats;
Donnant lus temps;
J'disons tous d'eune vouaix
Mercie bein des fais.
