The insular dialect — probably an antiquated form of that of the mother-island, Jersey — of course differs widely from the written language of modern France.

Guernsey - a Rich Literary Pie

Dr Jason Monaghan provides an overview of literary Guernsey, including this snippet:
I can say little about what some would call the island’s true literary heritage, that in the language of the islands. The local language is a version of Norman-French, generally called Guernesiais, but it was never a written language. Until the early twentieth century, the language of law and government was ‘Good French’, with the local tongue reserved for country folk. A small number of Victorian writers made valiant efforts to write down the language before it vanished in the squeeze between English and French, including Denys Corbet who referred to himself as ‘Lé Draïn Rimeux’ (the last poet). This work continues into the modern day, for example Hazel Tomlinson's P'tites Lures Guernésiaises. Heavily endangered, few people under 50 now speak more than a few phrases of the language. The Toad and the Donkey by Geraint Jennings and Yan Marquis is a newly published anthology of Norman writing fresh on the market.

The Nosey Genealogist

The Nosey Genealogist has an interesting recent set of posts on how to start researching family history in Jersey, and provides a potted introduction to the language situation:
One of the first things you are going to find, if you are researching your ancestors from Jersey is that the records are invariably going to be in French, as this was the official language of this island until very recently when English has become dominant. James pointed out that Jersey was very largely French or Jerriais-speaking until the middle of the 19th century, and so a lot of legal records long after that were kept in French. The deeds to my house, for example.

Census 2011
The next census of Jersey will be held on 27 March 2011. The first formal Jersey Census was held in 1821, when 26,800 people were found to be living in Jersey. Up until 1971 censuses in Jersey were carried out every 10 years and then every 5 years until 2001. In 2006 the States of Jersey took the decision to return to a 10-yearly census. The last census in Jersey was in March 2001, when the resident population of Jersey on 11 March 2001 was found to be 87,186.

Séyiz calmes et dêhal'-ous - Keep calm and carry on

Further to a previous post, we neglected to mention that we actually have a Jèrriais version of the Keep Calm and Carry On poster on a wall at L'Office. It seems to work: we manage to keep calm and carry on.

Editing work on the Spring issue of Les Nouvelles Chroniques du Don Balleine is done and it's ready to go to press. Adding to the 911-2011 festivities, it's a history special covering not only the events of 911 but other historical events before and since, both serious and less so. Contributions have been selected from classic authors - and there's none so classic as Wace - as well as welcome contributions from today's Jèrriais writers. The theme extends to historical sudoku, wordsearch and picture quiz. But the restaurant review and the recipe are up to date. Subscribe now to ensure you get your copy as soon as it's available.

Brîngi

La Section d'la langue JèrriaiseYesterday evening's meeting of La Section d'la langue Jèrriaise turned out to be somewhat of a reading session. The latest issue of La Voix du Donjon was discussed, especially the colours of cows. The word brîngi brought up a point of interest: one of the members could remember it being used in English conversation to refer to children messing around on their bikes.
